BackHouse Nation is a network of songwriters, producers and musicians
all united in a common cause creating good music. These artist are seasoned musicians
and producers and writers that have worked with some of the top acts past and present. We
have worked with Donald Byrd, The SOS Band, Lakeside, Rolls Royce, Eddie Kendricks to
name a few. Our genre is not just one kind, we have R&B, Jazz, Pop and Euro Grooves that
are all mixed in. Retrospect is the first CD and is produced by Mbaji.
Backhouse Nation started as Sigidi Abdullah, Mbaji and Harold Clayton and later included
Tommy Austin as it's core. Sigidi and Harold got their first big claim to fame by writing and
singing the original Boones Farm Apple Wine commercial in the late 60's. Sigidi and Harold
formed a band that performed at many local clubs in Los Angeles during the 70's, they were
called The Total Picture. They made Mavericks Flat a popular club their home base.
Mavericks was famous for supporting and grooming many up and coming artist, and was also
a hangout for many of the Soul Train Dancers. Harold, Sigidi and Mbaji would keep wrting
songs and they got a break, Eddie Kendricks would use one of their songs "Let Yourself Go"
on his Album 'For You". Their next major opportunity came when they collaborated with the
Mizell Brothers and wrote the mega hit's "Fallin Like Dominoes" and "Think Twice" for Donald
Byrd. This opened up more doors and led to the triple platinum hit "Take Your Time Do It
Right" performed by the SOS Band which was produced by Sigidi and written by Sigidi and
Harold. Mbaji would follow co-writing with Sigidi and Rhonghea Southern "Do It Now" the first
single off the "SOS Band Too" album. Since then rappers and artists such as Ice Cube, Will
Smith and Jazzy Jeff, Dela Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Wyclef John, Erykha Badu and a host of
others have sampled or covered their music. With a sad note, the transition of Sigidi, Harold
and Tommy Austin, a huge void was left in BackHouse Nation. Mbaji has taken the baton and
along with Don "The 1" Bell continue the tradition, spirit and vibe that produced all this
wonderful music. BackHouse Nation will continue the voyage, continue the quest. There is a
universe of music waiting to be found.
